Eleven European hardwoods.
For each species: its character, its uses and the formats we process it in.

Oak
European oak is hard, heavy and very durable, with a pronounced grain and medullary rays clearly visible in the quarter-sawn cut. Rich in tannins, it copes well with moisture: it is the first choice for flooring, furniture, windows and doors, beams, and barrels for wine and spirits.

Ash
A light wood, from white to cream, with a straight grain and long fibre. It combines elasticity and impact resistance: it steam-bends well and is ideal for furniture, chairs, flooring, tool handles and sports equipment.

Cherry
A fine, even-grained wood with a pinkish tone that warms towards coppery brown in the light. It is easy to work and polish: prized in cabinetmaking, for fine furniture, panelling and interiors.

Lime
Soft, light and uniform, pale in colour with an almost invisible grain. It carves with great precision in every direction: the reference wood for sculpture, carving, turning, model making and musical instruments.

Acacia
Hard and very tough, among the most durable European woods even outdoors and in ground contact, without treatment. From yellow-green to golden brown, it is used for garden furniture, posts, outdoor decking and vineyards.

Elm
An interlocked, decorative grain, light brown with reddish tones. Its irregular fibre makes it very resistant to splitting and to constant moisture: suited to furniture, flooring, worktops and damp environments.

Chestnut
Rich in tannins and naturally durable, similar to oak in appearance but lighter. It weathers well: traditionally used for beams, posts, fencing, windows and doors and rustic furniture.

Beech
Hard, uniform and fine-grained, pale pinkish in colour. It steam-bends very well and turns easily: the wood of bentwood chairs, furniture, flooring and turned objects.

European Walnut
European walnut is among the finest woods: warm brown with dark, lively figure, stable and pleasant to work. Chosen for cabinetmaking, luxury furniture, panels and interior details.

Black Walnut
American black walnut, dark brown with purplish highlights and an even grain. Stable and easy to finish, it is in high demand for fine furniture, doors, panelling and contemporary interiors.

Maple
Pale, hard and very fine-grained, resistant to wear. For its smooth surface and acoustic qualities it is used for musical instruments, flooring, furniture, worktops and chopping boards.
